Meeting Minutes 2010 January 2010 |
MARCH 9: Professor Charles Harker on Supramorphics Please come and hear KSU Professor Charles Harker, Architect discuss his graduate research which led to the development of the TAO design group. TAO Design Group developed theories and structures that have proved a prophetic forerunner of current trends in Bio-mimicry, sustainability and sculptural form. This work has been published internationally, and exhibited at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After 40 years, the research of the group continues to be relevant. Read More at the AIA Akron Blog AIA Akron February Chapter Meeting - Performative Design Research Performative design is theoretical platform upon which high-performance building practices such as sustainable, Carbon Neutral, and zero-energy buildings may be studied. Within this research platform, Dr. Sharag-Eldin will present some examples of his investigative work in integrative performative design and non-linear approaches. Since joining the faculty in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design in 2002, Dr. Sharag-Eldin has engaged his students in exploring avenues to achieved high-performance through creative non-linear design approaches. The aim is to combine parametric and reiterative design practices (also known as Building Information Modeling) with evidence-based approaches. This approach is further used in building systems design through the integration of technological non-traditional systems and responsive building materials. The resulting intelligent envelop is designed to drastically reduce reliance on conventional building control systems while maintaining high level of energy efficiency and personalized sensory comfort. Dr. Sharag-Eldin has over twenty five years of experience in the area of sustainable design. He has authored several papers and articles on high-efficiency and sensory comfort in national and international conferences and journals . He was engaged last year as a sustainability consultant for the government of Saudi Arabia on the expansion of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. In this project he was responsible for the development of a guide for the sustainable design and development of the complex. He served as an organizing member of the National Solar Conference held in Cleveland 2007 and chaired the technical committee. Dr. Sharag-Eldin is a professional member of ASHRAE, USGBC, and the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). The AIA Board of Directors voted to modify the continuing education requirements to demonstrate the Institute’s commitment to sustainable design. The sustainable design requirement goes into effect in calendar year 2009 and extends through 2012. The sustainable design MCE does not replace the original requirement for 18 total hours, 8 of which must be in Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) subjects. (As HSW is a subset of total Learning Units, sustainable design may be a subset of the HSW learning units.
